Running really slowly

For some reason, I've been running the emulator and it's been going really slowly. I can't figure out what's going on. The particular game I wish to play is Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days. Here are my computer's stats.

Operating System
    MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

CPU
    Intel Pentium D 940
    Presler 65nm Technology

RAM
    2.0GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 267MHz  4-4-4-12

Motherboard
    P4M800P-8237 (Socket 775)

Graphics
    P244W @ 1920x1080
    512MB Radeon X1650 Series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM) (HIS)

Hard Drives
    320GB Seagate ST332062 SCSI Disk Device (SCSI)

Audio
    Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller

Is there anything I can do (obviously besides get better hardware) to make the game run more smoothly and efficiently?

I think i'll ban you for your crude vision of the reality big_smile

@Pianodev:

Quite strange, Pentium D 940 is a dual core 3,2Ghz CPU, enought for most of the games. I've tested Kingdom hearts on my pc and it's fluid (I have a Core 2 Duo E8400 3Ghz). I suggest you to try one of the lastest SVN on Emucr.com

@dottorleo:
Pentium D at 3.2Ghz preforms worse than a Core 2 duo at 2.0Ghz.
Really, it's just a Pentium 4 with 2 glued cores. and its dual core is almost useless for applications like desmume.

I think not. I remember that sound and filters works in the second thread, so yes, Desmume uses dual core to gain some speed. Also as "Raw" power the 2 processor are similar but C2D have a different and way better efficient data execution than the old Pentium 4. I can't believe that this is the difference, Desmume uses SSE2 that is supported both on the 2 processors.

Re: Running really slowly

Fine let's put it this way: Pentium D is much older than a Core 2 Duo 8400 and performs worse probably from other architecture reasons despite it being dual core as well.

@pianodev: You sure u followed everything in the FAQ to boost performance like change to Software Rasterizer and stuff?

Re: Running really slowly

Everyone says pentium dual cores are the biggest crap, but its not exactly true

I have Pentium Dual Core e2180 2 GHz (clocked to 3 GHz) and for me its running very fast...... cirka 40-70 FPS (depends on which game it is)

example: Pokemon HG runs at 60 FPS

EDIT: for the non-belivers i can prove it with video

I have 486 DX 33 MHz (clocked to 309 THz with liquid helium condensate cooling) and for me its running very fast...... cirka 40-70 FPS (depends on which game it is)

EDIT: for the non-belivers i can prove it with video

Re: Running really slowly

lol too funny

anyway I do believe Pentium Dual Core e2180 is still newer and faster than the Pentium D pianodev has so you'll definitely have better results.

Re: Running really slowly

Pentium D's are crap, they're based on the Pentium4 architecture, that it's the worst thing invented, ever. Basically, your CPU is a pile of junk, so don't expect anything to run fast.

Re: Running really slowly

@zeromus

Noo, pls noooo it hurts too much :S........... but if you ask why I mentioned the DAMN pokemon game, look.... just use your brain and you will get the answer

To give you a guideline: Crysis and example GTA 4 etc in PC games, why overclockers are always talking about these games, why?

And no, this is not a provocation or something similarly, this is just my explanation of why I mentioned the concerned game, its a common theme on your forum and you should know what I mean

In PC games, Pentium D procesors are similar to Pentium E procesors....

@pianodev

How much FPS do you get?

@Others

My Pentium is a crap for PC, but not for DeSmuME

P.S. my English is not good, so do not blame me if I wrote something grammatically wrong..........

Re: Running really slowly

You're arguing points you are clueless about against people who are knowledgeable in them.

Your post about your e2180 running the game at a proper speed has NO relevance to the topic here because it's not a Pentium D. Furthermore you are making faulty assumptions - nobody claimed dual cores are crap, just that the Pentium D is. That's not an opinion, that's a well-established fact. Pentium D processors are similar to Pentium E only in that they have two cores.

I suggest you lose your snotty kid attitude when posting.

Re: Running really slowly

My friend owns a Pentium D processor and in PC games his procesor is very similar to mine (he plays only PC games)

And im not saying dual cores are crap, I wanted to say this:

Quote from shash: Pentium D's are crap, they're based on the Pentium4 architecture

Ive probably "sounded" strange in my previous posts but im just wondering, how is it so "Running really slowly" for him and not for me if we have very similar processors (i mean in PC games)

Re: Running really slowly

Do you want me to reiterate this over and over again?
You do not have similar processors. I don't care that his computer handles crysis nearly as well as yours does as the requirements for that are NOT the same as the requirements for DeSmuME. I don't care if your computer runs crysis at 200fps - it may very well run emulated DS games at 20fps because THE REQUIREMENTS ARE NOT THE SAME. Also, a Pentium D and a Pentium E are NOT THE SAME.

I also don't care about further arguments against this point. You asked your question, you got answered, and you keep asking the same question. Stop being thick.

Re: Running really slowly

Pentium Dual-Core CPU are actually low-end Core 2 Duo, which got branded as Pentium for whatever reason. it has nothing to do with Pentium D.

since Pentium D is made of 2 glued cores which weren't designed to work together, it preforms badly for applications with 2 synced threads.
I remember PCSX2's dual-core support had no more gain on Pentium D than on a HyperThreading enabled CPU.

as for SSE2, the question is not if a CPU has it, but rather how fast it is. e.g  my Pentium-M (Dothan) hadd SSE2 but would preform worse when using SSE2 than not. here's some data on the subject

Well, obviously PC games depend mostly on your video card, and much less on the CPU. That is not the case with desmume, which depends mostly on the CPU.

Youre arguing with an alien. Because they speak english youre tricked into thinking theyre human, but they're not. They're third rate alien clones. Its like the uncanny valley. Why bother.

Re: Running really slowly

@Manivo

"SIMILAR" and "SAME", these are not the same words or?

But you know this already

I think, you have not understood me when I said "similar", i I thought on speed (FPS in games) and nothing more

@yonizaf

Tnx for the mention, btw friends (ATi x1800) and mine (ATi x1950).... and im getting only about 10-15 FPS more in PC games, keep in mind that I have a better GPU and CPU..... thats why i said we have a similar processors

@zeromus

Im not going to start a new "war", but if you want smile..... prepare for my snotty-sharp alien teeths, its better for you to use an tear gas with sulfuric acid, trust me its very effective xD

lol im not "attacking" anyone of you guys, dont be too serious in all things, btw Isnt this what I said about processors (FPS in PC games), a bit strange?

And i think... this topic can be closed slowly, it does not have a great sense to be open because everything has already been said
