tavy: It doesn't work on 0.9, it does on 0.9.1 (at least on the windows port).

i just woul like to state that the other emulator (wich the dev has been missing for a while) play it quite well in my pc... so i figure its just a matter of time until DeSmuME plays it perfectly or nearly...

lhide: Desmume is a different emulator, thus a different performance and set of features... Your PC is too weak to emulate the DS as of now, not to mention that you've one of the worst gfx card ever created tongue

Shash: it was not my intention to offend... only to say if i can play it with 100% on the other emulator, even with this specs, i believe that it is just a matter of time untill desmume will be as good, or better...
because if one emulator can be pretty smooth even in a poor system, so does the other with some time...

lhide: Or maybe the different approach when writing the emulator makes the performance different. Remember that desmume runs on Windows, Linux and MacOS smile Of course performance might or not get better, but keep in mind that it's a different approach, so don't expect the same.

Just for the record: Pokemon Pearl (E) runs allright on my system with desmume 0.9.1 x86, although with a very low fps (+/- 10 or lower). My machine specs: 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS 512 MB, Intel Core DUO 2 CPU at 2GHZ. But like the other posters, I do hope that the speed will improve as no$gba 2.6 runs the same game on the same machine with 100 fps easily...

For me, both the (E) and the (U) versions of the game have a low fps of below 10 fps. I get the same result on two different machines. Perhaps it is configuration specific ?

I get about 60fps on my gf's laptop however most of the time in fields that goes along with the emulator still on just about 45~50%. Hence it still lags with the fps saying very little. You have any issues along those lines as well? Can't check on my desktop right now since I'm away from home, which would be more along the lines of your specs.

Well, there aren't really many options for the user to configure in the emu, other than turning off Direct 3d or turning off sound, so I doubt it's a matter of configuration.

Here's a couple of things to try, though;
Does it run better if you turn off the sound? (config -> sound settings, switch 'sound core' to none). Most computers have on-board sound, and some of those are very poorly done, to the point where under some circumstances the sound can take up around 40% of the CPU's power.
If you get a dramatic improvement in speed when you turn the sound off, you should buy and install a cheap sound card. I've had this issue with Guild Wars where it would stutter, so I went out and bought a 5$ sound card. You don't need anything fancy, you just need to keep the sound routines away from the motherboard.


Another thing that could help - after running the emulator, press ctrl-alt-delete to go into the task manager, and switch to the processes tab. Find the desmume.exe process, right-click it and under 'set priority' click realtime. That might help with the speed issues, by prioritizing desmume's CPU usage.



If it's neither of those, it may just be my two extra cores, and my newer graphics card managing the CPU and GPU stress better.

UUhhmm.... I meant the configuration of the PC's, not the configuration of the emulator.

I tried your suggestions of turning off the sound, and increasing the process priority, but neither helped in increasing the fps.

Still, iDeaS on the same machine with the same game runs at roughly 60 fps for me, and no$GBA runs at nearly 100 fps for the same game on the same machine. Now im not a developer, so I have no idea where the performance difference comes from, but it seems to an ordinary end-user like me that there is still some room left for improvement here.

Perhaps one of the developers could give some tips or shed some light on where and how to start looking for this large difference in performance ?

Ok ... now this is really weird.... When I start a VMWare Server Virtual Machine running Linux Fedora 10 on the same host, I suddenly get a fps of roughly 60 fps for the same game on the same machine. Perhaps it has something to do with the Windows OpenGL implementation of either the driver for my video card or the desmemu usage  of OpenGL on the Windows Vista platform ?

Every emulator is coded differently and are thus different in terms of what they play and how well. If any of the emulation projects would be at their 'finished' state, there would be room for consideration about what one lacks in optimization, but all of them are a work in progress. You're just as likely to find a game that works great on DeSmuMe that's running poorly on another emulator. A year ago you'd be hard pressed to find any emulator playing games correctly and at an acceptable speed.

From personal experience, DeSmuMe is currently leading the pack as an all-around emulation package, considering both speed and features.
