DesMuMe not creating new folders

My friend has been trying to play Pokemon White for a long time, but he can't save (there's an error message upon launching desmume saying you cannot save). After a bit of exploring, I found that the Battery, States, Roms and Cheats are missing. I tested it on my computer and these folders are automatically created when I launch it for the first time, and I am then allowed to save.

Has anyone got an idea about why this might be the case ?

run desmume from a directory on your desktop, instead of from the zipfile, c:\, or program files, where you do NOT have permission to create files.
