Pokemon Soul Silver random freezes

I've been trying to play pokemon Soul Silver but after reaching the town with the first gym I have been having random freezes when I am in the grass and about to encounter a wild pokemon. I don't have any cheats active or have ever used any, and I am using the most up to date version of desmume. I am also encounter black areas of the screen but they will disappear if I enter into a menu and exit so they are not currently a problem. I have tried loading multiple different saves and restating desmume as well as running as the administrator, none of this has worked so I am asking here to see in anyone has found a solution to this problem or if this game is still unplayable. Any help would be appreciated and I will answer any farther questions I can to the best of my knowledge.

stop using savestates. save in-game, restart the emulator, and load your in-game save frequently.

It won't let me save the game normally. I try and it says that it is saving and then I get a message saying

"Error saving data. The backup memory has failed. The game may be played, but it is impossible to save. Please turn off the power."

restart your game with a fresh desmume installation and test a save early on. youve scrambled it somehow.
