I've figured out that the name of the ROM image and the SAV file need to be the same, but what I'm not exactly sure of is where exactly both files need to be for desmume to find them both. Will it need both files in the same directory, both files in the spots where desmume usually keeps those types of files, both somewhere else entirely? The FAQ's dead on use of the slot other than "it won't actually emulate the GBA, just provide linkup features".
And is there any known issue using VBA saverams like this, or do I need to convert them to something else first? It sounded like there are a couple situations where a DS title can call for a save of the GBA's saveram, and given the pain I had converting everything off of nocash when I finally discovered this emulator (and never looked back, btw ^^) I thought I'd better ask before slamming into another headache.

this is supposed to work. the .sav should be named exactly the same as the .gba and be in the same directory as the .gba

Saveram and .gba in same folder, that's what I was tripping up on.
One S-rank-capable folder transferred over to Battle Network DS - check. Thanks.
