The problem:
I had previously been using it play Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey on a different computer running Windows 7 before installing it on the one from which I am currently posting, which is older and runs Windows XP. It now fails to start entirely; neither the command prompt window or the actual menu appears before an error message comes up and forces it to close.
My current specs:
2.0 GHZ AMD Sempron, 1GB RAM, nVidia FX5200, Windows XP Professional SP3 (a less than ideal rig for this, I know)
What I've current tried:
-Making sure I am actually using the Windows version
-Getting a clean download of the newest Windows version
-Trying the noSSE2 version
-Trying older versions
-Deleting the ini file
-Running the DirectX web updater
-Updating my video card drivers
Additional notes:
-No$gba seems to be able to open and run the game, but is unable to save
-I found that using the 0.9.6 build allows the emulator to open, but I still experience an error code crash a few seconds after booting Strange Journey. Whether this is because of the emulator or because of Strange Journey's infamous anti-piracy measures is uncertain to me.
-I did not use save states, cheats, or patch the rom
Let me know if there is any other information I can provide.

you seem pretty savvy. if you can get vc++ express and build the emulator in it and run a debug build, im pretty confident we can solve the problem. otherwise, we'll have to scratch our heads and brainstorm. I do have one idea: disable virus scanners.
