Movement control problem (Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum)

I'm having an on-again/off-again issue with the movement controls in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. The movement will generally get stuck in one direction, usually to the right but occasionally left or down. This issue does not alway occur immediately; sometimes I can get a few minutes into the game before it starts and I'll get stuck. Often though it starts as early as the screen where you input your name, just cycling left to right across the letters fast enough that it won't recognize lower screen input. If anyone else has had this problem or knows of any possible solutions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
