Pokemon black / white 2 Issue

Hey guys I'm having trouble. I cant use the A button when selecting anything from the menu in combat. It worked when I started playing and randomly stopped. the A button works out of combat and every other button works in the menu. Its not the biggest issue I just prefer to play with a controller. I didn't change any of my settings so I'm not sure why it stopped working. Thanks for any help in advance.

stop using savestates. save in-game frequently, close the emulator, open it again, and load from the game's file menu.
