Is it reliable to use save states as file if you start new game?(.dst)

Hello, I really want to play through Renegade Platinum again but I don't want to lose my battle frontier progress. A year ago my 1st laptop died but I had save states on my drive that way I recovered my data. I want to know if this is a reliable way if I want to play again through Renegade Platinum again is this a reliable way to keep your save data?
Thx in advance.

1. Officially, savestates aren't reliable. don't use savestates. save in-game frequently, close the emulator, open it again.  make backups of the .dsv files.
2. ALSO make savestates, and back them up. The way to achieve RELIABILITY is to move slowly, be careful, and make backups. Develop and test a recovery plan.
