Greetings and thank you for a fantastic emulator!
First thing: I really think this is the ROM's fault instead of the emulator. I have the newest version of Desmume and have had the game working correctly since I downloaded everything and tinkered it all. I've played over 5 hours but I just got to Chapter 4 in the game (DQ4: Chapters ... Chapter 4 lol) and when I exit the very first town the bottom screen isn't displaying anything besides being black.
I did a search and saw that a moderator here has had the game working fine, and he said he was far past where I am right now. I even loaded an older save in Chapter 3 to see if the bottom screen works there, and it does.
I've been tinkering with this for quite a while and if I can get this working I'd appreciate it. The original is my favorite game of all time. (No lie, I even have a quote of it on my facebook lol.)

Oh I forgot to mention that the bottom screen works in town, then I go outside town it doesn't work, but THEN if I wander around and get into a battle it works again.

post a savestate and savefile from the town which was formally called monbaraba but which was probably renamed for no good reason so that when i exit, the overworld is missing. maybe the problem can be debugged. it doesnt sound like something that would be the rom's fault.

I'm very silly and goofed up the exact description. The world map is working, but the one where it hovers over your character as they walk along is not. (It is also the screen you see the monsters and attack commands in.)
Here's three files: (And I really appreciate the help, again the original is my bread and butter of RPGs. It's very nice of you!)

First-- The only thing I can think of that hovers over your characters is a MENU. Is that what youre talking about?
Second-- Can one of you find a savefile on gamefaqs and fly over to monbaraba province and see if it flakes out? That would tell me whether it has to do with chapter 4, or chapter 4/5, or your position in the world.

I couldn't find a savefile on GameFAQ or anywhere else. But perhaps these screen shots will help?
^Everything is normal
^This is immediately after the first; the black screen would be all black if I didn't hit the button that opens the menu. I have all layers enabled so I'm rather confused.
Thank you!

That's the overworld, by universal definition. The thing which you identified as the world map is the world map by universal definition.
Anyway, that successfully identifies the malfunctioning part of the game, though we havent yet performed the test to see whether it has anything to do with the position in the overworld.
Theres a savefile for the JP version on gamefaqs.

I believe it has to do with the overworld position of the characters. I just figured this out a moment ago. It happens in Chapter 4 and 5. The reason why I know it also happens in Chapter 5 is because I played Chapter 4 in another emulator and then transfered the SRAM file back to DeSmuME.
All you have to do is travel south and the bottom window goes black. This should help you debug, perhaps.

oh yeah that would be the goods. I am guessing it is 3d precision problems which we are well aware of in desmume. If that's whats causing this, it will be a useful test case. These particular problems are likely to be fixed before the next release, but I haven't verified it yet.

Yeah so when you walk down beneath the threshold the game renders just as many polys as before but theyre all vanished somewhere far away from the viewport. Also I noticed the battle-intro screen wipe looks like ass. Got a few bugs in this one.

I managed to get a little farther in the game and now I have the ship. Now you can move around freely in the ocean and test the map from more coordinates. Again, just go south.

that would be neat. please do.

Ok, here is the save for Dragon Quest IV near Mintos, with the balloon. Just get in the balloon and go south.
I've also included a save for Dragon Quest V. This game has the same problem. This save has the party in the ship.

Thanks for your savestates. The cause was as expected. as of r3660 the bug in these games are fixed by converting geometry engine to fixed point, but the code is experimental and who knows what else it broke.

So... is this going to be fixed in the next release? How long until it's fixed? I'd like to finish the game on my computer.
