Dragon Quest V Suddenly Freezes on Opening Menu

Hello, all.

I suddenly ran into some trouble while I was playing Dragon Quest 5 on DeSmuME 64-bit.  First, when I switched the LCD view from one screen to two, I began to get a tremendous amount of flicker as both LCDs tried to render both their own screen and that of the other screen, from what it looked like.  I could not figure out how to fix it, so I uninstalled the emulator and downloaded it fresh.  This fixed the flicker issue, but now I have a new problem.

Now, anytime I try to open the menu in the overworld in Dragon Quest 5, the game simply freezes and refuses to respond to any inputs.  I had made a copy of my save states and simply pasted them back into the States folder in the emulator's location, so I was hoping I wouldn't need to start the game all over again.  Loading the save state works just fine, and I can run around and get into random battles; I just can't open the menu.

I'm using the DirectDraw SW display setting and have only mapped a controller instead of using a keyboard; I haven't messed with any other settings.

I did a quick look through the first couple of pages of the forum and didn't find anything directly related to my problem, so I'm hoping someone would be able to help me out or at least tell me I'm SOL.  I appreciate any advice!

***EDIT:  It appears it was a problem with the save state itself and not any other dumb things I tried, as I was able to load a proper game save and now have no problems opening the menu.  From a technical perspective, is there an explanation as to why a save state would cause this trouble and not a game save?

savestates will propagate errors caused by cheating. or errors caused by bugs in emulation, but I don't think I've heard of any such errors in dragon quest 5. save games start it from scratch (unless the cheats broke the save file)

That is interesting; thank you very much for the insight.  I haven't been using any cheats, but I have been mashing the save state function like mad throughout the game, so could it possibly simply be accumulating  errors through the emulation?  My knowledge of such things is definitely limited.

Re: Dragon Quest V Suddenly Freezes on Opening Menu

As long as you were only saving state, then it would have to be errors accumulating through emulation. (problems caused by savestating are much more rare than problems caused by loadstating). It's also always possible the game itself is bugged. It's also possible the game itself is bugged in a way that's only manifesting on desmume--whether that means desmume has a bug for not matching the hardware is a fine philosophical point, but in that case that the game is bugged at a minimum is demonstrable fact. This is the case with pokemon HG/SS. But like I said, I don't know anything about such problems with DQ5. It could even be a cosmic ray hitting your PC. It's happened to me at least once in my life.

Bottom line is -- always make in-game saves AND backup your dsv file when playing long RPGs. It's the only way to be sure.
