Yes, I read the FAQ.
I have followed every instruction on that list.
I have a ridiculously overpowered Alienware M17x, so it's DEFINITELY not my computer that's the problem.
On top of running at barely 10 FPS instead of 60, it draws all the 3D polygons in the wrong order - leaving background in front of foreground and random isolated tiles floating in mid-air.
Both of these problems make it impossible to even consider recording videos - which is what I want to do (I already bought the game cartridge and love it...)
So... Where are the problems coming from?

OK. Some questions.
1. What version of DeSmuME are you using?
2. Which OS do you have installed and which is your processor?
3. Did you have selected the "Synchronous" option selected with "Synch Method "P"" and the option "Advanced SPU Logic" actived in the sound settings in the emulator?
4. Did you disabled "Enable Advanced Bus-Level Timing" in Emulation Settings?

I went to the Downloads page and clicked the first one (not because I was confused, but because that's what I wanted XD)
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, with an Intel Core i7 processor.
It is a 64-bit machine, but I tried DeSmuME x64 and it worked even worse >_>
I'm using Dual SPU Synch/Asynch for sound, because the other mode just gives white noise (ow)
I tried disabling Advanced Bus-Level Timing but it made no difference.
Thanks for trying to help

your video card is a fail. set display method directdraw SW and switch to software rasterizer.

Did that. Title screen is now getting:
FPS: 21/60 (99%)
(Note that when using OpenGL and directdraw HW, it was 23/60)

then try fixing your power saving functions which may be crippling your cpu. try issuing --num-cores=1 on the commandline to see what that does. as a separate experiment try setting the cpu affinity to one core. disabling Advanced Bus-Level Timing should help this game's performance. if it doesn't, then something is going wrong.
i should warn you that this may be normal performance for your system, since this game goes nuts in an unusual way. so it MAY DEFINITELY BE your computer that is the problem. although it is a bit lower than i expected for your cpu, maybe laptops are weird. youll have to consult the faq for other speedup suggestions, primarily frameskip
We don't have a lot of data on how extremely turbo-boosted cpus do on desmume, but I expect that it is: quite poorly. You think your system is faster than it is because it has been finetuned for gaming, and desmume doesn't follow a similar pattern. Restricting it to one core may help it turbo-boost more correctly. When desmume spins up all those threads for your multi cores, it cuts the speed of your cpu by a large fraction.
