Pokemon Heart Gold still freezes at complete random?

...despite only using in-game saves. This appears to be a common issue with this specific game, where it completely softlocks out of sheer randomness after some time passes, typically when entering or leaving a location or initiating a battle. I downloaded the "anti-piracy" patch, and attempting to enter the "anti-freeze" AR codes just crashed the emulator and forced me to delete the cheats file.

It would be really disappointing if there's absolutely no way around this. Upon checking several (very low-quality) Youtube videos where the uploaders only state "fix: don't use save-states!", everyone in the comments says "thanks! problem solved," which just seems rather sketchy given how the game already began freezing for me on the second route before making any save-states.

I can't seem to find a way around this problem despite trying the aforementioned "solutions." I really can't be bothered to remember to save every 10 minutes when playing for hours at a time, just because the game spontaneously and sporadically falls apart for no apparent reason. I even figured an auto-savestate feature could possible help here, but that doesn't seem to be possible.

(lol)

Re: Pokemon Heart Gold still freezes at complete random?

Making savestates doesn't break the game. Loading savestates doesn't break the game. Using both together rather than saving in-game denies you the opportunity to reset the game, which is what's required to fix the game, after it breaks all on its own (it accumulates cellular damage and eventually succumbs to screen-freezing cancer)

There's a great way around it: use the latest version of desmume.

I think you should be glad you have such a low-pressure example to learn on. If you learn how to save frequently, it will profit you immensely in life. Please be bothered to learn this lesson now.

Re: Pokemon Heart Gold still freezes at complete random?

I should've mentioned I already have the latest version. Considering every other DS game works perfectly fine, the fault of this peculiar issue seems to lie within the ROM itself.

I can reset the game just fine, which is only a temporary fix. When I only used in-game saves, it still eventually softlocked, although seemingly not as quickly as after making a save state. But saving/loading/Not using states made no difference. As of now, I can simply provide updates when possible.

Re: Pokemon Heart Gold still freezes at complete random?

The issue is with the rom and emulation both combining unfavorably.
The latest version has measures (you need "enable game hacks" enabled ) to work around the problem, but I guess I'm not surprised to hear that it isn't perfect.

You seem not to have understood the reason for the guidance to not use savestates. This is simply because people don't know what "in-game saves" means, but if I tell them not to savestates, they know it means the other kind of save.

Interesting. Haven't tried this "enable game hacks" option yet, though I can't seem to locate it anywhere?
