Mac OSX EL Captain DESMUME 9.11 Pokemon Pearl Help

Hello. I need some serious help. I recently broke my windows PC so i am borrowing my friends mac for a while. I am pretty new to Mac products so I do not know how to fix this problem. I downloaded Desmume 9.11 about an hour ago. Then I took a .7z file and renamed it to .nds, because I was just guessing and don't know what I'm doing. But really I should have opened the .7z file and extracted the .nds from within it. Thanks!
