Hey guys, so yea the title basically sums it up.
Desmume used to be working fine on my laptop but about a month ago it stopped working (strangely all other emulators also stopped working). And by stopped working I mean it launched the program but then the program was unresponsive, I couldn't open any tab, move the window around or even close it. I ended up having to Task Manager to close it, basically it would just have that swirling blue loading circle thingy that pops up when a programs unresponsive and your mouse is on it and nothing else. For some reason it would also throw my cpu and mem usage up to about 20%. It seemed like the computer was trying to open the program but that it wasn't strong enough. I had a tech-savy friend come take a look at it and basically this is everything we have tried.
Delete + Reinstall
Install previous versions
Run with Admin priv
Run with various compatability packs
Clear registry files and attempt everything again
honestly thats about it.
My laptop is pretty powerful and I don't have problems running any high end games at 60+fps so I wonder why it would seem as if it was struggling to launch the emulator.
PC Specs:
i7-4700HQ 2.4 /3.4 GHZ
8GB Ram
GTX 740M
Running on windows 8.0 not 8.1
I was able to run Desmume and other emulators previously but then all at once they just stopped.

Well thats the problem in itself. I don't install any 3rd party software or go on any "shady" sites or click on those "you've won an ipad"-esq links. I've done a full scan with norton and Avira and I don't have any malware/trojans/worms etc. I'm not here asking for people to "fix my windows" yes there is a problem affecting all of my emulators which includes Desmume, so it is still a Desmume compatability problem of sorts. Even if the other emulators are having the same or a similar problem that does not change the fact that Desmume is still having the same problem. I'm afterall not asking for a PC fix but possible ideas on what could cause Desmume to stop working. I didn't have to include the info about the other emulators stopping at the same time but I did because perhaps it would help. My pc on the other hand is completely fine and working without any problems. The only problem is with Desmume (hence why i am on this forum). I'm not trying to be an ass but If you don't want to help or you don't have any ideas just don't post. The fact of the matter is that whatever other programs are affected is irrelevant seeing as Desmume is the one that we are talking about and it is affected aswel. If I knew what the root cause was or If I had been able to gather any more information I would have stated my problem in that format, seeing as I have done everything in my knowledge to solve the problem and have been unsuccessful I have come here.
Tl;dr
No malware or 3rd party software
Desmume is affected, bottomline. (other programs are irrelevant and are there for information purposes)
Nothing else is wrong with PC
EDIT : As far as I gather it's not a desmume problem but perhaps a compatibility problem.

My bad, sorry about my previous post. I was in a not-so-good mood and wasn't paying much attention to "other emulators" instead of "some other programs", so I should apologize.
What are the emulators which also stopped working? Are there other emulators which continue to work normally?
I don't use Windows 8, but as you said it worked before, there must be some changes causing this. Maybe it could be a Windows Update or a driver update. Have you enabled automatic Windows Update? Maybe a list of updates around the time it stopped working could help.

Np man, happens to all of us. No i update windows manually and haven't updated it since the event occured ( or prior to the event), I believe the current version is 8.1 and i'm on 8.0. I updated my driver but I can't recall if it was around the time this event happened. Prior to writing this post I have installed a previous graphics driver and tried but still no luck. I have also tried running it with the integrated graphics driver and that didn't work either. These are the other emulators I had that stopped working at the same time. Tried all the steps I took with Desmume for them aswel and still nada.
ePSXe version 1.9
Project64 v2.0

that isnt much of a diversity of alternate emulators. try fceux to gather more data; or, if you can make it that far, try changing config > display method in desmume

Same with Fceux, VBA and no$gba. every single other program is fine. When I start them they get to the normal window but then there is no interaction possible. Just a loading sign and then I'm forced to task manager

I'm not sure what directdraw involvement your ePSXe and Project64 have, but fceux and vba are probably displaying with opengl and no$gba could plausibly be using it (I dont know for sure). You need to try one which is positively using opengl. Maybe give retroarch a shot. Then we can discover whether it's directdraw's fault.
With desmume, you can try manually adding this to desmume.ini in place of the previous [Video] section, the important part being Display Method=3 which sets opengl instead of directdraw
